Discipline just one, she had been taught, and all the animals will learn. Make sure your discipline is to the point and memorable. It will last.

“Step back and find a good position to observe,” she said and the trainees spread out in a full circle around her example cow.

As she tapped the controls, Ursula reinforced every step out loud so the trainees could understand the mechanics.

“First, engage the suction. There are several levels of suction and I prefer to start virgin cows at a low level so they are not milked too quickly. The dial is set at ‘one.’” Every trainee made a mental note to start suction at level one.

The cow’s teeth suddenly clamped down hard on the rubber bit that split his jaws.

“After the suction is started, the next step is to add some squeeze to the catheter. I’m turning this dial to ‘slow’ so that the cow gets used to the feeling.” Ursula adjusted the dial as the trainees noted mentally to engage squeezing after suction.

The cow’s hips shot forward and then relaxed before they shot forward again.

“Note the effect of squeezing,” Ursula pointed out. “The reaction can be described as humping.” The trainees nodded and Ursula continued. “At the slow level, the animal might even think it’s enjoying it. To counteract that feeling, I’m beginning the probe’s work while upping the squeezing to ‘medium’ and turning the suction to level two. Watch what happens.”

The trainees’ eyes concentrated on the cow as it became fully engaged in the process. Its hips were gyrating and thrust forward and backward as its teeth were firmly compressed on the rubber bit. Given the short tethers, the cow humped in a single spot and performed what was called the Farm’s milking dance.

“Cows learn better when they are mooing,” Ursula said. “To force the moo reaction, adjust the squeeze dial to ‘high’ and set suction to at least four or five.” She watched as the girls memorized the numerical settings and simultaneously focused on the cow that was now vibrating repeatedly to the rhythm of the milking machine.

“Listen for it,” Ursula warned.

It started slowly but soon grew to a level that filled the barn with the sounds of agony punctuated with macabre delight. The cow wailed its song that was picked up by the control room and reissued through the barn as a repeated mooing sound. The cow’s ears drank it in and as the trainees smiled at Ursula’s skill. The cows in their stalls whimpered in fright. Even though they could see the example cow screaming, what they heard was the distinctive sound of a male in agony.

“How long do we allow that to continue?” a trainee asked.

“Good question,” Ursula said. “When the cow is fully milked, the sound will change dramatically and that’s when you will know. That is the time to stop the movement and begin your internal work.”

Ursula adjusted the controls and both the suction and squeezing ceased as the cow’s torso calmed. Within moments, a new feeling invaded its body and the mooing began even louder this time.
